VTVI was designed to be used for basic, generic, single input audio cards. If you are using a semi-pro card with multiple inputs, go into your Windows Control panel, and under Sounds and Audio Devices, on the Audio tab, ensure that the default recording device is not set to Multiple. Make sure that it is set to a specific input, such as Input 1/2.
