Beginnings

WideOrbit was founded in July 1999 after Eric Mathewson recognized antiquated software in the media industry was hampering the ability of media outlets to operate efficiently. Near monopolies in the industry had effectively limited technological innovation and the primary legacy software in the industry at that time hadn't had a meaningful update since the 1970s.

In late 1999 and early 2000, WideOrbit met with key broadcast group executives while in initial product design to ascertain current and future needs in order to build a traffic solution that would fulfill present needs and have the ability to expand for future requirements. As a result, WideOrbit has built the most technologically advanced system available and includes many innovative features not offered by competitive systems.
